The Value of a Good Investigator

Posted by RCaldwell on June 10, 2013

You may not think about it much, but criminal defense attorneys use investigators regularly.

When you are charged with a crime, and you are choosing the right attorney to fight for you, like those attorneys at McMichael & Logan, it’s important not only to hire a great attorney, but also to hire one who has great people working with him.  For this reason, it is critically important that a criminal defense attorney have a talented and experienced investigator working with him.

Many people think the only investigation that takes place in a criminal case is done by the police.  This is not true.  A good attorney will enlist the help of an investigator to help him gather facts in order to help his client.

Consider this situation:  you have an argument with your neighbor.  Two hours later, police officers are knocking on your door, and proceed to ask you questions about the argument.  They tell you that your neighbor is claiming that you attacked him, and that he has injuries that support his story.  In an instant, a harmless argument has transformed into a situation where police are threatening you with criminal charges and with jail time.  You are afraid – it’s your word against the word of your neighbor, and he has injuries to back up his version of events!

It is in precisely this kind of situation that the skills and experience of a dedicated investigator become critically important.  You need someone with the keen abilities of a trained investigator to hunt down witnesses who might have seen what occurred between you and your neighbor, witnesses of whom you might not even be aware.  The best lawyer in the world may be great in the courtroom, and he may be able to investigate and ask neighbors questions, but legal rules prevent him from testifying for you about what his investigation revealed, or what witnesses said.  Even the most skilled and thorough lawyers rely on investigators for just these reasons.

While your attorney works diligently on what will happen in the courtroom, his investigator is out finding information and witnesses, evaluating the procedures and credibility of the police who investigated you, and supplying your attorney with his invaluable, real-world expertise and professional judgment.  Your attorney will need all of these to keep your neighbor’s lies from landing you in prison.

A good investigator empowers an attorney to do the best work possible on your case.  When you hire an attorney, it pays to know that the investigator working with him has all the qualities and abilities of a trained professional.

At McMichael & Logan, we recognize that only a top-notch investigator will ensure that we can do the best criminal defense work possible for you.  That is why, in criminal investigations, we work with Billy Reynolds, from the investigation experts at Brighton Lewis.  His expertise in investigation was honed by years of law enforcement experience in the Saint Louis County Police Department, and even led him to serve inIraq, where he trained Iraqi citizens to be police officers, so that they could serve their own communities.  Billy is also highly trained in proper police procedure for DWI stops and arrests, and today continues to teach courses on that subject to both lawyers and police officers alike.

At McMichael & Logan, we recognize that excellent criminal defense requires not just excellent lawyers, but excellent investigators – which is why we work with Billy Reynolds. You can visit his website at www.brightonlewis.com.

(Paperback) This book is a God-send for people who are loonikg for study material prior to taking the test, for new Private Investigators just entering the profession, and for the experienced Private Investigator who is expanding into a new area of practice. In all my research, this is the only source that explains what a Private Investigator can do and what they can't do, based on case law as well as explaining the liabilities associated with PI work. Well done!

Thanks for posting this, and good point no doubt. We have made an efrfot to do strict due diligence on all our potential deals that are outside the U.S., but only recently starting adding the bank account searches to solidify our findings. Hire a professional. I couldn't agree more!

Hi, my name is Teri. My boyfriend Laith works with you at Tamo. He told me about this wetibse and what you do. I do have some pictures i would like you to look at. They aren't like most ghost pictures. It's not shadows or orbs (though i have a bunch of them). You can see a girls face and she looks a lot like me, but a little different. I think it might be my older sister. Also, i was wandering if there was anyway i could talk to you because i don't just find ghosts in pictures. I can see them in person. Everytime I tell somebody this they think i'm crazy, or that i'm wierd. I'm not. My mom used to tell me how she could see them, and I thought she was making it up, until this one time Laith and I were in bed and I had been having nightmares all night. I woke up and didn't want to go back to sleep because i didn't want the nightmares to come back. I was awake for like 10 minutes, laying on my side, so it wasn't like i was still half asleep. I went to stretch and turn over on my back, and when I rolled over there was this girl hovering over me staring at me right in my face. It took me a second to realize what was going on, and I just screamed and closed my eyes. When i opened them back up she was gone, and i just cried. Ever since that night i have noticed that I'll see them all the time. At night, in the middle of the day, it doesn't matter. Also that girl that was hovering over me that night, is the same girl that is in the picture. She looks so much like me, I really think it might be my sister. Well, anyway, I have so much more to say, but it would take me forever to finish. So I'll have laith talk to you about this. Oh, and if he forgets, and you get this then mention it to him. He usually forgets everything. Thanx

Hi Harold,Thanks so much for getting back to me. I don't want to use my work cmpuoter anymore though. I have just recently relocated back to Toledo from West Bloomfield, MI. My cmpuoter should be up and running next week. I have had several paranormal experiences, and would like to assist in the study in places of interest. I would be an excellent addition to your team. I have used cameras and EVP's along with my feelings . What I feel ghost hunters deal with are earth-bound spirits and I would like to help them cross over. I am in my fifties but feel like 25! If you are all young, what the heck .chance it on an older woman you may enjoy the experiences! Please call. Love to help, once again.Brenda R. http://xekqerv.com pvzhlzwlg [link=http://anekgsttkft.com]anekgsttkft[/link]

Hey Harold, this is Matt Mills. My mom works at one of the local schools, and for years they have exicepenerd things that cannot be explained. Paranormal things. Anyways, they are moving to the new school over Christmas break, and they need help getting rid of the spirit(s) that are there. They are afraid that the spirit(s) will follow them to the new school. They just recently found a message that was left from the other side , in the school. We have pictures of it. She needs to get it approved to have someone investigate there. Arlene had mentioned to my mom that you provide services like this. If you can contact me about providing your services, that would be helpful. Thank you Harold. Matt Mills (419) 705-3068

I believe in paranormal I have my own cards, I've smudged the house and a priest has came and no relief. I want to find out if my son is a medium since it runs in the family or we have a entity following me and now gas an interest in my son. 5672131158. How much do you charge because funds are limited but would like to get answers and prevent long term use of medication for my son if we are dealing with the paranormal vs mental illness. I have been hearing noises last night it sounded like popcorn popping and my dryer being on which I thought was strange. Thank you

Nice article, I agree with most, auohtlgh I think if you don't have the qualities needed in an investigator, going to a college or school will not help you get them. You can't teach someone to be charming or think on their feetAnother important quality is that to make a call, when you are following someone in a car and you lose them aruond a corner you need to think VERY quickly and make a call sooner rather than later. If you make the wrong one 40% of the time its ok, because if you stop to think once a pursuit is underway then you will not stay on their tail 100% of the time

Chief, I have been seeing on the News and the Hammond Times about a City Ord from 1991 that is was ulfnwaul Even with a valid Gun Permit to carry a Firearm in a City owned building or Park ,I can understand I would hope Common sense would apply in the City Buildings Especially Court Rooms and it remains ulfnwaul to have any kind of weapon unless one is a Law Enforcement Officer . The Park Could you Please clarify that ,Example I go Fishing sometimes late at Oxbow Park with the Grandkids and when the Housing Projects was there I always carried my legal Handgun with My PPP , I no longer do that ,But I do fish Wolf Lake sometimes until 3 Am . But now in what I have been Hearing a Person would be in Violation of the Law and could be arrested. As you know Hammond Parks closed at 11:00 PM Unless you are at one with a lake and posses a Valid Fishing LicCould you if not to much problem please clarify this on Your blog or a direct E-Mail Thanks Keep up the Great work and Be Safe, PS I like the Way Chicago did the Gun Law, Yes You can carry a Firearm on Your Property but to be legal You must take a safety course and know How and when you can legally use the weapon and how to secure it Properly. I wish Indiana did that too. As You know we have to many weapons taken in Burglaries Etc. that wind up in the wrong Hands That makes it especially dangerous on the Streets For the law Enforcement and the CitizensSincerelyDon L Crozier Sr..PS I think the Mayor and You should be able to Make special Ord and run the City Safely as you know it things are a lot different down State . http://wfvwbrfca.com umijeltwnk [link=http://vdjhmuy.com]vdjhmuy[/link]
